A scaffolded approach for tamariki with very limited oral language who are entering bilingual programmes

He Papahou Kōrerorero uses daily language experiences, enabling ākonga to convey information, talk about some everyday objects and express simple ideas. It also supports kaiako to use a range of nominal and descriptive sentences, negate some of these sentences, ask simple questions and give instructions.

The programme uses the analogy of a Papahou, a form of waka huia, to carry the critical paradigms of intergenerational language transmission, oracy as a revered form of communication and how we value and treasure our mokopuna as taonga. The programme was developed by Fiona Matapo in response to an analysis of language use from the aromatawai tool Kia Tere Tonu and was trialled in 3 Kura before a final version was developed.

Natural conversation

He Papahou Kōrerorero can be used with a small group or whole class to support ākonga to acquire language so that they can talk about everyday objects in an authentic context.
A complete programme

The course includes a pre-programme orientation section, an extension section and a range of supplementary activities that kaiako can download and have available for independent activities.
Embedded aromatawai

A diagnosis of pre and post programme language use is obtained using the aromatwai tool Kia Tere Tonu alongside your own observations of ākonga in the daily classroom setting.

I had a completely different view of teaching kōrero. This course has placed me right in the drivers seat and I know exactly where I am headed. The simplicity of the wananga makes it achieveable for both the akonga and myself the kaiako. For me I have a starting point that I can fully understand and deliver and know that the skonga will be benefit because I will know what I am doing and why.
