He Whakataki

An easy to learn, fully resourced reo Māori reading support programme.

Te Ara Pānui was extensively trialled and proven very successful in the early 1990’s by the Tumuaki of Te KKM o Te Whānau Tahi ki Ōtautahi, Rhonda Te Wheoro. The programme was subsequently updated in 2006 by Chrissy Ward (RTLB) to further support ākonga to read in the Northland region.

The programme resources have now been fully digitised as a series of e-books for ease of use in both Kāinga and Kura setings. The digitised reading resources, teaching materials and this online course were written and presented by Chrissy Ward.

Ngā Hua

  • Why Te Ara Pānui?

Te Ara Pānui is a Kāinga / Kura based supplementary reading support programme that boosts ākonga knowledge and strategies related to foundational concepts about print, phonological awareness and high frequency word recognition.

  • Accelerated Reading Instruction

Te Ara Pānui supports a 1:1 guided reading approach where the ākonga has the sole attention of the kaiako at kura for explicit accelerated reading instruction. At home, ākonga have the sole attention of a whānau member to listen to them practice their new reading knowledge.

  • Resources Included

All the necessary materials required to set up and effectively implement Te Ara Pānui in your classroom are provided via links to e-books or downloadable kaiako documents.

A well-structured reo matatini programme for our tamariki who need the extra support and tautoko. The resources are very helpful and engaging for our tamariki, being hands on, digital, interactive and can be accessed i te kāinga.

It was a great programme to help those who struggle reading in te reo Māori. It has helped all of the tamariki from my class that have been on this program and i whakapakari rātou i tō rātou pūkenga pānui.

The program proved to be successful with neuro typical ākonga, however with some of our neuro diverse tamariki got to a point or a particular rerenga kōrero and stalled. Or they could do the pānui in the program but couldn't transfer their knowledge to other pukapuka. I think that using the supporting resources for the whole class or group as part of the daily program would help to support success. Especially as tamariki progress through the readers as they are spending more time out of class. My experience as a kaiāwhina delivering the program was that allocated time was subject to the class program. On reflection, I would take the tamariki individually, then take a group for a supporting activity, as well as having the supporting resources as part of the class reo a tā kete.
